Contraception

There are many different methods of contraception available. Each method will suit different people at different times of their lives depending on their age and medical history. Here we have summarized the methods available and briefly explained how they work.

The Regent's Park Clinic is licensed to give advice on contraception, including emergency contraception.

Most contraceptives need to be prescribed by a doctor with the exception of condoms which can be bought over the counter.

Where can I obtain advice and a prescription for contraception?

  • The Regent's Park Clinic (see above)
  • Any GP who provides contraceptive services
  • Any family planning clinic
  • Any Brook Advisory Clinic (whose particular aim is in helping teenagers)

Remember

If you have had sex without using contraception and are concerned that you may have become pregnant, emergency contraception is available. You will find information on this subject under Emergency Contraception.
Although male and female condoms protect against sexually transmitted infections, hormonal methods and the coil alone will not do so.
